Electricity consumption is an essential component of modern living, both for industry and consumers. This consumption, however, comes at quite a cost, with large electric bills and environmental impacts. SMC is dedicated to helping large consumers of electricity lower their electricity bills and environmental footprint using breakthrough advances in software and electronics.

The SMC team of seasoned software and electronics experts use new technologies to dramatically improve the efficiency of the number one consumer of electricity in the world, electric motors. These account for 45% of global electricity demand* and while there have been advances in this area, only modest, incremental improvements were being made before SMC. The company was founded in 2014, and in the Silicon Valley tradition, SMC takes a completely new approach to its product design, based on software, digital signal processors (DSPs) and other advanced electronics. The company’s innovations dramatically improve efficiency, cut electric bills and ultimately help improve the environment.

Creating a new electric motor, specifically a software and DSP controlled, high rotor pole switched reluctance motor, has resulted in dramatic improvements in energy efficiency. Depending on the application, up to a 75% improvement in energy efficiency, and in some cases even more, can be expected. In addition to being ultra-efficient, SMC motors can be securely connected to central data repositories behind the firewall or in the cloud. When electric motors are connected, the data they generate can be visualized and analyzed. Further efficiencies can be expected from a network of motors via optimization and ultimately control. SMC motors are smart, Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Using Big Data, cloud and advanced analytics, further electricity consumption insights, efficiencies and benefits will be gained.

The SMC products are recognized and acclaimed by the US Department of Energy, CleanTech Open and the National Science Foundation. The SMC motors are currently being used in a range of HVAC applications. They will also appeal to those in other industries such as Agriculture …. pumps and ventilation systems, Transportation and beyond.

SMC’s smart motors are efficient, connected, versatile, reliable and affordable. We look forward to discussing their use in your organization.
